Plenty of artists have immortalized family in song, but hearing DaBaby sing “I’m my brother’s keeper and it been like that forever” hits different. The G in My Brother’s Keeper (Long Live G) is for DaBaby’s brother Glen, who was found dead of a reportedly self-inflicted gunshot a little less than three weeks before the MC would deliver this EP as tribute. On songs like the title track, “8 Figures,” and even “Gucci Peacoat,” we hear DaBaby reckoning with the loss of someone he loved immensely and still couldn’t save. “I’d trade anything just to see big brother get up/How you even mean to do this?” he raps on “8 Figures.” The EP does contain a couple of tracks unrelated to Glen’s passing—along with some standout features from NoCap, Polo G, and Toosii—but in all, My Brother’s Keeper (Long Live G) remains a testament to how much family means to the superstar MC.
