[Edit]Guitarist Scott Scharinger and drummer John Bradley are indie emo-punks. Bradley sings with enough emotion to make Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan sound unconcerned. This second studio album—recorded in Chicago by Neil Strauch (Bonnie “Prince” Billy)—is a no-nonsense work, where the duo’s minimalism works in their favor, leaving plenty of room for Bradley to emote (“Chewing Ghosts,” “Fake Knees”) and for Scharinger to move from angry chords to meandering riffs with freedom, while also supplying bass. “You Hold Back” takes a cathartic personal stand. “But” wants to make personal connections that “Take Back Today” doesn’t sound ready to handle. Let the ambivalence roll.
