Though he's best known as a backup musician for greats like Spider John Koerner and Dave Van Ronk, this CD of guitar duets showcases Dakota Dave Hull's astonishing skill as both a guitarist and composer. At times Hull sounds like John Fahey during the latter's sunnier moments, playing bright ragtime pieces and introspective tunes inspired by American traditional and old timey music. The interplay between Hull and his three collaborators here is nothing short of stellar, and many of these pieces deserve to become classics. The liner notes on this CD are informative, recounting the inspiration behind the original tunes and the provenance of the covers. If you enjoy instrumental guitar duets, Reunion Rag is a must-have album.
