Dale Fielder is best known for his alto and tenor playing along with his occasional solos on soprano sax. Baritone Sunride shows that he is also a masterful baritonist. On baritone sax, Fielder is most influenced by the deep guttural sound and hard bop style of Pepper Adams along with that of Nick Brignola and Ronnie Cuber. Joined by his ten-year-old quartet, which features fine solos from pianist Jane Getz and solid support from bassist Trevor Ware and drummer Thomas White, Fielder roars his way through a set of his swinging hard bop originals, Pepper Adams' "Muezzin'," and three modernized standards, including a romp on "Lover." His ideas are creative and there is no lack of passion throughout this frequently impassioned date, which makes the case for Dale Fielder to be considered one of jazz's top baritonists.
