Darren Hanlon is an Australian songwriter who finds odd little points to ponder within the big picture. His simple folk melodies are the perfect vehicle for his dry, expressive delivery. “Modern History” sounds like a classic mid-tempo rock ‘n’ roll song with chirpy harmonies coursing through Hanlon’s lesson for the day. “Scenes From a Separation” has a measured flow and vocals that remain calm as the details describe an atmosphere that’s not nearly so smooth. “All These Things” includes call-and-response vocals that are reminiscent of Jonathan Richman. “House” is a desolate song about a relationship that’s no longer in effect. “Folk Insomnia” and “Butterfly Bones” turn to the humorous side of folk. “If Only My Heart Were Made of Stone” is a quick-stepping country number about the downside of love. “Buy Me Presents” has a skiffle sound to pump up its sales pitch. “What Can We Say?” is a sweet piano-based number that emphasizes Hanlon’s compassionate voice that sounds like the perfect everyman in action.
