[Edit]Always one to make unpredictable artistic choices, the intriguing trumpeter/composer/bandleader debuted his '10s quintet in a most unusual manner. Be Still, from 2012, featured guest vocalist Aoife O’Donovan on two-thirds of the album. Tracks averaged around five minutes, and solos were concise and tactically executed. For Time Travel, the band gets to stretch out more conventionally over the course of seven Douglas originals. The pulsating “Bridge to Nowhere” opens the group’s first fully instrumental effort with a feisty declaration, as Douglas and saxophonist Jon Irabagon power the front line. Drummer Rudy Royston’s toms work and pianist Matt Mitchell’s comping are the secret weapons on the sinuous title track. Linda Oh’s solo on the fierce “Garden State” showcases her nimble double bass playing. Sequenced right in the middle of Time Travel, the country-swinging “Beware of Doug” is the sound of a locked-in band having a blast.
