[Edit]One of the most interesting things about Year of the Tiger, from the Dave Turner Quartet, is the story of its recording. Four of Canada's most respected jazz musicians united for a week of live concerts in Montreal, and after several nights of improvisation, made a recording. Consequently, the album is a record of a band that had played together only for about a week. It is understandable, then, how The Year of the Tiger could contain music that is neither always as tight as it should be nor exploring any real new territory. Certainly the talent of the individual players shines through, especially that of pianist Jean Beaudet, but the end result is an album that sounds like background music in a jazz club — pleasant, surely, but not enough to grab your attention and make you really listen.
