Dave Liebman (doubling on soprano and tenor) and pianist Phil Markowitz engage in ten passionate dialogues throughout this duet set. The first eight selections are listed as four originals by each of the musicians, but in reality the fairly free improvising makes the duo co-composers for each of the improvisations. It is obvious that Liebman and Markowitz have worked together on and off for a long time, for they build on each other's ideas and often speak as one. Whether it is an introspective ballad or a more heated exploration, their playing is full of sparks and subtle surprises. The set concludes with an abstract version of "The Night Has 1000 Eyes" and a reharmonized "'Round Midnight." Throughout this fascinating recital, Liebman and Markowitz consistently inspire each other and, even with there being a few dry moments, the date holds one's interest throughout.
