[Edit]His first real full-length studio album of original material since 1970’s Holly Kaleidoscope, Broken Biscuits was released a year prior to British folk guitarist Davy Graham’s death in 2008. Graham’s aim here was to make a companion piece to 1967’s live outing After Hours At Hull University. Like that album, Broken Biscuits was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs. Opening with “Panic,” a mellowed reworking of Norman Simmons’ “Panic Room Blues,” Graham’s acoustic guitar immediately chimes with warm resonance as he picks, slides and strums minor chords with his signature nuances. Graham’s own “Flower Mountain” is a more impressive affair as it seamlessly blends Eastern European and Indian melodies with dark and alluring fretboard runs. Fans of Graham’s jazz guitar will delight in the breezy “Rooty” and the more contemplative “Afrika.” He picks up the pace on “Samarkovskas,” throwing in some harmonic strums before his weathered voice is first heard on the a cappella “Sa Ma,” an original ballad musing on ancient Sanskrit epic The Ramayana. His take on the traditional “Precious Memories” plays with hobo boxcar- traveling authenticity.
