Details
[Edit]Dawn Robinson first gave good groove with R&B diva group En Vogue in the '90s. Next up for the siren was the Grammy-nominated Lucy Pearl. In 2001 it's just Dawn. Her self-titled debut is a bouncy, feel-good R&B affair. "Set It Off," the album's opener, does just this. It's fun and light and rolls on in a laid-back groove — you'll want to crank this one in the car on a warm summer day. Dawn oozes with attitude, street savvy, and rich urban flavor. Funkified arrangements — with tasty acoustic and electric guitar stylings — and dance floor appeal, combined with Robinson's sassy, soul-inspired vocals, make this a winning solo effort. For good measure, worthy ballads such as the life-affirming "Get Up Again" are included. Not for nothing, but Robinson leaves those "bootilicious survivors" in the dust. She has loads more personality, and her album is way more textured and interesting than work by her peers.
