[Edit]The classic ballad is alive and well on Dayna Stephens’ Peace. The saxophonist has a superb band—pianist Brad Mehldau, guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Eric Harland—on this 2014 gem. Stephens brings great feeling to his baritone sax playing on “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”; later in the track the band stretch out, taking the song into new territory. A hushed version of “Deborah’s Theme”—an Ennio Morricone piece from the film Once Upon a Time in America—is buoyed by Grenadier’s arco bass. “Moonglow,” a bass-and-sax duet with a spring in its step, closes the album.
