The recent revival of Stuart Argabright's cyberpunk techno project Black Rain must have made the cult favorite nostalgic for his no wave days. There's really no other way of explaining the sudden reemergence of Death Comet Crew, a hip-hop/industrial/electro hybrid that didn't manage to release a proper album before its most intergalactic member (MC/multi-medium artist Rammellzee) died. Or the fact that Ghost Among the Crew actually works, paying tribute to the downtown icon both in title and the tracks themselves. Like the group's loose-ends LP This Is RipHop—a compilation of live cuts and sporadic studio recordings—the vibe here is very '80s without feeling the least bit dated. It's set in a dystopian future instead, with graffiti-lined, rain-slicked walls in the background and a boundless mix of chunky breakbeats, jazzy guitars, sci-fi synths, and wild-eyed raps setting a mood that's both paranoid and poppy. Somewhere, somehow, Sun Ra and his new BFF Rammellzee are smiling down from the cosmos.
