Though Death in June would become an outlet for the dark, neo-folk musings of sole member Douglas P. early on in the project's existence, the first few records were very much the collaborative work of a band exploring gothic rock and early industrial rock territory. 1983's mini-album The Guilty Have No Pride saw a trio of Douglas P., Tony Wakeford, and Patrick Leagas crafting sinister compositions somewhere between the goth rock groundwork cleared by Joy Division or Bauhaus and the lurching, eerie minimalism that would become signatures of later Death in June albums. Two versions of "Heaven Street" highlight this stylistic tug of war, one a churning post-punk sendup sounding like an outtake from Joy Division's Warsaw demos, and the other a slower acoustic reading, brimming with tension and guided rhythmically by an electronic blip and floating, paganistic percussion sounds.
