[Edit]With legendary producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper) ensuring that the sound is everything it can be and with keyboardist Don Airey nailing down the distorted organ riffs much like the late Jon Lord did for the band through the '70s, the modern Deep Purple shows no signs of age nor rust. Though the subsequent decades have seen Deep Purple's reputation stagnate in comparison to its contemporaries like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, Deep Purple remains among the heaviest bands of the rock era. Guitarist Steve Morse has always been a guitarist's guitarist, and with singer Ian Gillan leading the pack, tracks like "A Simple Song," "Weirdistan," and "Blood from a Stone" are natural additions to a catalog that includes "Smoke on the Water" and "Space Truckin'." By ignoring fads and sticking to its core sound, Deep Purple is sure to satisfy the old-school hard rock fans alienated by the various changes in rock 'n' roll over the decades. "Hell to Pay" swaggers like it's 1974 all over again.
