This is how Montreal’s Demon’s Claws should be heard: primitive, rough and raw. After 2007’s Satan’s Little Pet Pig, the band gathered up demos and unreleased tracks for Lost In the Desert, and we’re glad they did. From the ‘70s punk of “Sunday Dress” to the back-porch blues of “Hambourg” and the Exile On Main St. ferocity of “Loud Mouth,” Jeff Clarke and his gang have put the umph back into punk rock. Clark’s wooly howl is particularly feral on these tracks, and sounds convincingly like his bite would be worse than his bark; guitars hammer and seesaw through layers of murk and distortion, fueled by unfettered testosterone and adrenaline. “How the West Was Won” sounds like a lo-fi demo from the 13th Floor Elevators, and “Old Hag” is a stunner: imagine the Gun Club and Hasil Adkins jamming at a house party in 1985, when the kegs have emptied and only the most stalwart are left standing. Yeah. Yeah.
