What a nice surprise this record is! The Oxford, Miss.–based bedroom indie-pop dude is known to be stylistically all over the place yet capable of delivering shimmering pop music. On his 2009 debut, The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, May presented ukulele songs that could inspire people who'd never listened to ukuleles get up and dance around like Beavis and Butthead when a rap song they like comes on. For Do Things, May amps up the Beach Boys vocals and summery good-time vibes, while throwing new elements into the mix: percolating dance beats, smooth synthesizers, and even funky slow-jam bass. These elements aren't on every track, but they do happily invade songs like “Don’t Wait,” the title track, and “Fun.” “Wedding Day” is the happiest Atari-themed BBQ song ever written; it has one imagining a long-lost collaboration between troublemakers Ween and genre-benders The High Llamas.
