Details
[Edit]This LP (which is long overdue to be reissued on CD) has a dozen of the finest performances ever recorded by trombonist Dicky Wells. Wells, who is heard before he found fame with Count Basie's Orchestra, is featured on three numbers (including a memorable "Bugle Call Rag") with three trumpets (Bill Coleman, Shad Collins, and Bill Dillard), guitarist Django Reinhardt, and a pianoless rhythm section; three other songs use the same group, with Coleman as the only trumpeter. In addition, Wells is heard with a septet and on versions of "Lady Be Good" and "Dicky Wells Blues" as the only horn in a quartet. Wells' humor, distinctive sound, and ability to swing are all well showcased on these near-classic performances.
