Digital K, aka Keith Ruddock, is carrying on the family business, American style. The nephew of the late, great King Tubby, Digital learned his studio techniques at the feet of the dubmaster. In 1985, Digital emigrated to the U.S., where he furthered his studies under the aegis of Tubby's protégé, Scientist. However, over the years, the young Jamaican was also charting the course of the States' own music scene. King Tubby's in the House is, in a way, Digital K's doctoral thesis in remix techniques, as he shows off all he's learned and pulls together a myriad of influential stylistic threads along the way. It's a quite stunning mix of genres, firmly based in the electro scene, but shifting from house to drum'n'bass, acid jazz, and jungle, and with great dollops of dub pulsing through. Funk, soul, and hip-hop play their parts as well, while Jamaican elements are also sifted through. King Tubby's in the House is the ultimate resume, as the studio whiz creates cutting-edge rhythms, and the instruments and vocals bleed in and out. As the tracks pulsate by, you can checklist the styles, and Digital K proves himself the master of them all. His uncle would be impressed.
