The name of the game for Dirt Bike Annie on Show Us Your Demons is catchy buzz pop with welcome boy-girl harmonies. While these New Yorkers' sophomore full-length is no Pixies album (it lacks the dark tension crossed with exuberant surf pop), they've got a knack for a good hook (the uplifting "Two Ton Wait" for example), which brings them in line with post-Pixies popsters from early Weezer and Weston to Nada Surf. They do angular Devo-esque pieces too, like "The Sends," Breeders lo-fi ("Note to Self"), and grand indie rock anthems ("Emergency"). And while boy-girl rock groups are always refreshing, Dirt Bike Annie just hasn't reached its potential yet. Show Us Your Demons is extremely radio-friendly and a lot of fun, but it doesn't quite reach the ingenuity of albums by coed groups like Pretty Girls Make Graves or Enon.
