Dirty Filthy Mugs' second full-length is a fun, rousing punk explosion. Hints of Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, and Motörhead pepper Up in the Downs. Like so many punk bands, the subject matter veers to crazy relationships, con men, and being "Blocked Up and Smashed." Guitars are distorted and raging but with an ear to catchy hooks. Conk! absolutely destroys his drums. The playing is tight and the musicianship smart. The flamenco and accordion solo flourishes on "Outcast" change things up and paint a picture of the group's eclectic influences. Matt Wedgley hoarsely shouts about society's ills, fake plastic cities, and just getting by in life. Up in the Downs is street punk done right, with heart, passion, and a throbbing pulse.
