The second release by Chicago’s Disappears shows the band moving in the direction of Moon Duo or Wooden Shjips, with huge, hypnotic grooves that cycle and chug and hypnotize. The quartet manages to make repetition exciting, with a voracious appetite for rippling wreathes of fuzzy, crunchy guitars that sputter and churn, and Spartan floor tom pounding that drives a person to whiplash. It’s a good thing “Superstition” isn’t the 15-minute opus that “Revisiting” is, as it could cause serious injury. “Halo,” however, treads near that danger zone with nearly four minutes of relentless, driving guitar attack, kept tethered to terra firma with concrete-bottomed bass lines. You might think that whatever Brian Case is singing (well, shouting) about must be really important, but since deciphering actual lyrics is a challenge, we won’t pretend to know. Any fan of Spaceman 3, Can, or the bands mentioned earlier will happily hitch a ride in Disappears’ vortex of whooshing tremolo washes and throbbing rhythms.
