Mr. MuthaFucka

Though DJ Assault's many mix albums provide a better idea about how this notorious Detroit artist's productions are intended to be heard — within the context of a fast-moving, up-tempo DJ set — Mista Muthafukka serves as a perfect sampler for those who want to have a compiled collection of his most well-known late-'90s anthems in unedited form. All the tracks that attracted Assault's cult following are here: "Sex on the Beach," "Tear the Club Up," "Checkstub," "Ass-N-T*****s," and many others. And, for once, it's nice to hear these tracks in their full-length versions; Assault will usually only devote up to a minute to a given track on his mix albums before mixing in a new track. But this album does get a bit tiring without the quick-moving pace of a DJ mix to keep things interesting, as these tracks are very repetitive and loop-based, making them great for DJs but a little too simplistic for ordinary listening. So while this album works as a great reference, either the original vinyl EPs or the mix albums do these tracks more justice — they're primarily meant to be DJ tools, not radio singles.
