Expectations can be high when an artist makes as strong of an official debut as DJ Shadow did in late 1996 with his seminal Entroducing.... But as Reconstructed—The Best of DJ Shadow shows, the producer and pioneer of instrumental hip-hop has continued growing. Released in 2012, Reconstructed includes selections from his five studio albums, plus rarities. The classics “Midnight in a Perfect World” and “Organ Grinder” are here, as are previously unreleased songs with cult vocalist/guitarist Terry Reid (the dramatic “Listen”) and techno-pop warriors Little Dragon (the glistening “Scale It Back”). The moody yet assertive “Lonely Soul” with vocalist Richard Ashcroft (ex–The Verve) is from Shadow’s work as half of UNKLE, while the expansive “High Noon” is a popular single from 1997.
