For his fifth album, DJ Tira maintains his Durban identity through a variety of genres. Different strains of gqom are showcased on most of Rockstar Forever—it’s embellished with electric guitar licks on “Ngawe” and meets bolobedu house and a sprinkling of amapiano on a remix of “Insimbi.” Genres like maskandi (“Rambo,” “Zulu Lami”) and gospel (“Ngiyabonga Baba”) are embedded into gqom and soulful house, and are just some of the many sounds DJ Tira has been fond of throughout his career. Coinciding with Tira’s 22nd year in the music business, the album is a testament to the veteran’s staying power and certified rock-star status.
