Djeneba Seck has been singing since 1984, and had her first hit single in 1991. This debut recording, Kankelelentiguya, remains a Malian masterpiece that is a hymn to that nation's transition to democracy. This is her third album, and her authentic voice echoes her ancient land's sacred heritage. Her songs are poems that touch on timeless themes of love, harsh words, mortality, agreement, and trust in God. She seems to be singing from a primordial wellspring of music. Her vocal approach is traditional, as is the instrumental backup that includes a large percussion ensemble and unguent guitar phrasing. The djembe work is exceptional, and there are some breaks that beg for extension. This album makes no concessions to Western pop pressures. It stands on its own as a testament to the uniqueness of Malian music. A fine album and a good introduction to the traditional music of this land of mystery and sand.
