[Edit]A native of Russia who made his debut as a leader in 2006, alto saxophonist Dmitri Baevsky primarily focuses on compositions by bop greats, though many of them are infrequently recorded. Well accompanied by pianist Jeb Patton and bassist David Wong (who have worked together in the Heath Brothers' band) plus drummer Jason Brown, Baevsky sizzles with his opener, a lively setting of Bud Powell's "Down with It." Thelonious Monk's "We See" is sped up a bit, with adventurous solos by the leader and Patton. His luxurious tone is showcased in Duke Ellington's exotic "Mount Harissa" and a dreamy take of the standard "Last Night When We Were Young." Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt guests on several tracks, including a gorgeous rendition of "LaRue" (Clifford Brown's tribute to his wife), a playful take of Sonny Rollins' "Decision," and a foot-tapping midtempo interpretation of Powell's "Webb City." Wong and Brown provide solid support throughout this enjoyable session.
