Winners of both the 1999 True Value Country Showdown and the 1999 Jim Beam Country Band Talent Search, the Don Campbell Band offers up a serving of Americana mixed with traditional country in their latest release, The Mashed Potato Swing. Campbell wrote every cut on the album except for Elton John and Bernie Taupin's "Honky Cat." While Campbell and his band make some respectable music here, especially on the rough and tumble "High Plains" and the patriotic "Veteran's Day," the album lacks the variety that sets an average record apart from a memorable one. In all fairness, Campbell probably isn't out to pitch his work on Music Row; he seems content, at least at present, to play the local scene. When all is said and done, Campbell and the boys can be proud that they have produced a completely original collection with a decent instrumental delivery and a pleasing, mellow sound.
