Although the pair of Don Redman Hep LPs have since been superceded by the Classics CDs, the inclusion of liner notes and a few alternate takes might make this release superior in some collector's minds. The first of two Redman LPs covers the pre-swing big band's first five sessions, featuring either Red Allen or Sidney DeParis on trumpets, the underrated (and now forgotten) tenor of Robert Carroll, and several vocalists including Harlan Lattimore and the cheerful leader. Of the 16 numbers on this fine LP from Scotland, the most memorable tracks include "Chant of the Weed," "I Heard," "How'm I Doin'," "Hot and Anxious" and "I Got Rhythm."
