[Edit]Dorrough might be the most extraordinary ordinary rapper going right now. There is nothing particularly distinctive about his voice, his lyrics, or his attitude, yet almost every song he jumps on could be a hit. Part of the appeal of his sophomore album, Get Big, is that it’s a Southern rap fan’s Southern rap album. Hailing from Dallas, Dorrough is one of the most adaptable personalities out there, and with these songs he shows his ability to assimilate an array of regional sounds. There’s a little bit of Atlanta bombast, a little bit of humid Houston soul, and a little bit of skittering New Orleans bounce. In many ways, Dorrough is a producer’s ideal rapper — big presence, but never intrusive — and Get Big features some of the industry’s best, including Nitti, Mouse and TJ Toomp. When Dorrough tries to sweeten it up and go a little R&B, the results are flat; this young rapper is a slugger and he gets the best results when swinging for the fences on “Sold Out, “Get Big,” “Get ‘Em Live” and “Way Better.”
