The Vinyl Singles Archive from the Douglas Fir is a definite introduction to the band's divine melodic darkness. Singer/songwriter Jay Walsh is an uncanny match for the Church's Marty Willson-Piper and his bandmates Patrick Cooley (bass) and John Michael (drums) follow his lead with dreamy instrumentation. "My Favorite Thing" and "When My Day Is Done" swirl with lush guitar romance and Walsh's lyrical depictions reel into something mysterious. "Unwelcome" shimmers with classic new wave ambience; however, the grainy loveliness of bonus track "The End of the Beginning" transcends into a wide-open space of wallowing self-destruction. The Vinyl Singles Archive, which collects six tracks found on both of Fir's first two vinyl 7" singles, is a fitting compilation. It highlights this Boston band's work in progress. They're not dated — just content in capturing what once was.
