Anyone unfamiliar with Jandek's music might be surprised to hear that these cover versions are surprisingly conventional compared to Jandek's original recordings. These are conventional? The excellent 2003 film documentary Jandek on Corwood tells the tale of this outsider artist from Texas. In brief, Jandek has released more than 60 albums on his own label, Corwood Industries, with his earliest recordings featuring either untuned or radically tuned guitars. Along the way, Jandek's music has garnered a diverse following of musicians. The first tribute album, Naked in the Afternoon, came out in 2000. While critically well-received, it suffered commercially from Jandek's low profile. However, the release of Jandek on Corwood ensured that this 2005 tribute became better known. Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Sebadoh's Eric Gaffney, Okkervil River, Six Organs of Admittance, The Mountain Goats, and Dan Melchoir took time to find new ways into Jandek's mysterious material. Dirty Projectors chose to write an original—"With U Icon (An Homage)"—in the style of Jandek. Despite their obscure nature, the songs here are often quite poignant and lovely.
