[Edit]Lovers of old-school roots reggae will recognize the name of this band as a tribute to the great Burning Spear. They'll also recognize this band's sound as a similar tribute, though one that is influenced equally by the dub-crazy experimentalism of Adrian Sherwood and British lovers rock. Dry (Shigemoto Nanao) and Heavy (Takeshi Akimoto) are a bass-and-drums duo in the spirit of Sly & Robbie, Steelie & Clevie, and Style & Flabba, leading a shifting crew of studio hands through a program of original compositions and dub versions. They've clearly done their homework, and are equally at home in martial rockers and laid-back one-drop modes. Singers Likkle Mai and Ao Inoue contribute some of this album's finest moments (the sweet "Dawn Is Breaking," the even sweeter "Love Explosion"), as well as some of its slightly embarrassing ones (the lyrically awkward "Private Plan"). Overall, this album is a clear labor of love and a triumph of roots reggae traditionalism in a time of computer rhythm banality. Highly recommended.
