A Maryland-based duo down with the always on-point Mello Music Group, DTMD is Dunc on the beats and Toine on the mic. Like its name (a nod to pioneering legends EPMD), DTMD's sound is heavily influenced by the golden-era/true-school sound, though it brings plenty of original style to the table and never come off as merely a throwback revivalist outfit. Dunc's instantly likeable production is built around simple drums and choice samples, though he displays a impressive sonic diversity that flips crazy raw chops one minute (the frenetic "Been Trying") and Dilla-inspired murky mellowness the next ("You," "Keep On"). Toine's verses are on the casual everyman tip, with strong rhymes about triumphs and struggles, never wallowing into predictable thug tomes or anti-bling complaining. The guest list is small and select, with enjoyable appearances from such likeminded artists as Oddisee, Kev Brown, YU, Godly MC, and Quartermaine. This is great music from two cats we'll hopefully hear much more from soon.
