The first volume of the Eagles’ Greatest Hits covers the band’s genesis as the prototypical California country rock band, but following the departure in 1975 of founding members Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon, the band reinvented itself as one of the era’s premier hard rock acts. Guitarist Joe Walsh joined in 1976, and his uncouth, electrifying riffs brought the band its biggest hits yet, including “Heartache Tonight” and “Life In the Fast Lane.” Even as they turned up the volume, the Eagles continued to refine the template for ‘70s smooth rock with “The Sad Café,” “I Can’t Tell You Why,” and “New Kid In Town.” Of course, the song that incorporates all the elements of the Eagles’ mid-‘70s heyday is “Hotel California,” which, over the course of six-and-a-half climactic minutes, mirrors the band’s transition from gentle Los Angeles troubadours to stadium rock gods. If Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 made the Eagles a household name, Vol. 2 confirms their legend.
