Eels is essentially the artistic conceit of E, stage moniker of Virginian Mark Oliver Everett, a musician who seemed to split his youth between low-grade delinquency and the enchantment of four-track demos. While Beautiful Freak, Eels' 1996 major-label bow, was a Beck-ish slice of burnished alt-pop that gave E an MTV, this 1998 sophomore effort took a turn down darker musical avenues, likely spurred by the death of Everett's mother and sister in the interim. It's a deeply challenging personal work haunted by such troubling meditations on mortality as "Elizabeth On the Bathroom Floor," "Going to Your Funeral Pt.1," "Last Stop: This Town" and the spare, ethereal title track. Angular sonic Beck-isms still pop up, but now in service of one of the '90s most accomplished volumes of musical introspection.
