Where Eels' first three albums had largely been the product of singer/songwriter E, this expansive 2001 release found the ambitious musician entering into a more comprehensive songwriting/production collaboration with UK producer John Parish, known for his similar work with P.J. Harvey. The results are a more upbeat and eclectic batch of songs variously informed by Burundi/Bo Diddly shuffles ("Jungle Telegraph"), the boogie-rock fusion of "Souljacker Pt.1", and elegiac trip-hop of "Fresh Feeling." Even acoustic-centered performances such as "Woman Driving, Man Sleeping" and especially the infectious "Friendly Ghost" find E and company in a distinctly sunny mood.
