The line between trapero and Latin pop star blurred somewhat in the latter half of the 2010s, as artists known for criminally minded bars freely dropped romantic fare over glistening dembow productions. So it speaks volumes that Eladio Carrión kicks off a new decade with an album that is so undeniably and overwhelmingly an affirmation of Latin trap. Sauce Boyz honors the grimy and gutsy traditions of this urbano subgenre by reaching out to arena-level headliners and barrio favorites alike to bring the proverbial feeling back. Between dastardly contributions by the likes of Bad Bunny, Miky Woodz, and Noriel, Carrión basks in the good life like a proper hip-hop bad guy. Having largely grown up stateside, it makes sense that he links credibly with English-language rappers including Smokepurpp on “Huh?” and Lil Mosey on “Safe With Me.”
