[Edit]ELAN hails from Guadalajara, Mexico, but the quintet’s sound owes far more to ‘60s Bay Area blues-rock and ’70s Southern rock than anything identifiably Latin. After years of success in its native region, this English-language band makes its American debut with See Us Spin, a potent offering of searing rockers and sweltering slow tunes. Lead singer/keyboardist Elan DeFan has the sort of powerhouse pipes that invite comparisons to Janis Joplin and similar rock goddesses. She’s matched in ferocity by her lead guitarist (and brother) Jan, who unleashes scalding slide and wah-wah licks throughout this set. Tracks like “Bad Days Are Gone,” “This Old Machine," and “The Action” deliver aggressive riffage and strutting choruses. The gritty shuffle groove of “Everything You Ever Wanted” has the kick of a vintage Lynyrd Skynyrd number. Jan’s fret-frying solos on “Stranger” and Elan’s subdued yet intense vocals on “Peace and Quiet” show the band’s grasp of rock balladry. By keeping things pure and direct, ELAN makes a strong bid to win fans north of the border.
