Chicago’s Eleventh Dream Day have been rocking small clubs since 1981, soldiering on like Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo, while other bands break-up and reunite and reap the rewards of a “comeback.” Riot Now! is the band’s first full-length release in five years and it continues the group’s streak for powerful sonics and intense tunes. “Satellite” has both an undeniable hook and a space-jam breakdown that proves the group can still generate Sonic Youth- Yo La Tengo -Pavement styled indie-rock with the best of them. Leader Rick Rizzo’s been an underrated rocker for decades, drawing comparisons to Neil Young’s Crazy Horse for his adherence to tough guitar workouts and live takes meant to break your heart. Riot Now! was recorded as a live performance and everything works. The celebratory boy-girl vocals of “Divining for Water” between Rizzo and Janet Beveridge Bean are a welcomed diversion here, a touch of sweetness amidst the maelstrom.
