Listeners expecting someone with the last name of Von Trapp to record an enjoyable holiday album would be right. Elisabeth Von Trapp descends from the famed Von Trapp family, immortalized in The Sound of Music, and although she's certainly inherited talent, her style is much more low-key. Christmas Songs' spare piano, guitar, and cello arrangements highlight Von Trapp's gentle lead vocals on 13 holiday songs. Several songs — "I Wonder as I Wander," "Good King Wenceslas," and "Because All Men Are Brothers" — will be familiar, but the joy of this collection comes from a number of less familiar pieces. "The Cherry Tree Carol" tells the story of Joseph refusing to wed a pregnant Mary with a somewhat typical male response, "Let the father of the baby gather cherries for thee!" "Ding Dong Merrily on High" may qualify as a rather odd title, but the song excels by grafting an older holiday song into a new context. This eclectic mix of songs reminds one of Peter, Paul & Mary's holiday album, and keeps Christmas Songs from blending in with every other seasonal effort. Von Trapp has crafted an enjoyable album sure to brighten the winter holiday. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr., Rovi
