[Edit]Taller Children is the charming major-label debut by the New York-based Elizabeth & The Catapult. This piano/drums/guitar trio spreads a lot of interesting ideas and styles across this release without missing a beat. They can move from light and playful gems like “Race You” and “Complimentary Me” to sophisticated pop ballads like “Rainiest Day of Summer” and “Golden Ink” with confidence. Elizabeth Ziman is the pianist, vocalist, and principal songwriter and her tunes are well crafted and crisp and the lyrics generally clever. She has a sweet and versatile voice that shows some bite (“Momma’s Boy,” “Taller Children,” “Hit the Wall”) as well as genuine tenderness (“Apathy”). Aided by producer Mike Mogis (who has worked with such artists as Bright Eyes, M. Ward, and Rilo Kiley) and a few guest musicians who add some nice orchestral touches, Taller Children is a thoroughly enchanting first effort.
