Some know Ellen Foley for her vocal performance on Meat Loaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” (Karla DeVito lip-synchs to Foley’s vocals in the video). Others remember her as the actress who played public defender Billie Young on the TV sitcom Night Court. But dedicated rock fans remember her three solo albums from the late '70s and early '80s, produced by folks like Ian Hunter, Mick Ronson, and Mick Jones of The Clash. Thirty years later, the former 5 Chinese Brothers singer/songwriter Paul Foglino has written more songs for Foley’s forever-strong hard rock voice. With Matt Ettinger and Eric “Roscoe” Amble (Del Lords) producing and a strong core of backing musicians supporting, Foley blows through this set of tunes like it’s 1981. It’s an organic mix of roots and rock, with Randy Newman’s “Guilty” fitting in comfortably next to the soul feel of “Any Fool Can See” and the nightclub blues of “I’ve Been Around the Block and Back.” Foley takes charge with “If You Can’t Be Good” and isn’t afraid to end with a prayer of sorts with the ballad “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.”
