Elton Motello (the band’s name, not a specific person) toed the line between punk rock and new wave. Fronted by the charismatic Alan Ward who used to sing for the glam-punk band Bastard, Elton Motello recorded two albums and three singles between 1977 and 1980 before disbanding. Jet Boy compiles 18 Elton Motello recordings beginning with the risqué title-track. “Jet Boy” is a gay-punk anthem originally titled “Ça Plane Pour Moi” and recorded in 1977 by Belgian musician/producer Plastic Bertrand who sung the song in French. For his English-sung rendition, Ward hired the same studio musicians to back him and kicked open his closet door with rewritten lyrics about a young boy’s interesting love life. The pointed “In the Heart Of the City” and “Queen” both show a Devo-esque angular vocal approach and analog electro flourishes.
