Concise in length (19 tracks in under an hour), Elvis at Sun is sprawling in its musicality. Collecting tracks cut during Presley's year or so as an artist on the groundbreaking Memphis label, it implies nearly everything that was to come — more great rockers, especially, alongwith heartfelt country music and the occasional smoldering blues. Even the somewhat silly novelties he cut there (the Disney "I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine") are amazingly fresh a half century down the line. And the reallygreat stuff — his reinventions of blues and bluegrass on "That's All Right," "Blue Moon of Kentucky," "Milkcow Blues Boogie," "Baby Let's Play House," and "Mystery Train" — are towering, and also just damn fun. If you've always wondered what the fuss is about with Presley, start here. You'll get it.
