Produced in New York during six months of recording sessions, Lotofire became Ely Guerra's first international release. After issuing a self-titled debut album in 1992 in her homeland, and Pa' Morirse de Amor in 1997, the Mexican alternative pop/rock performer teamed up with Venezuelan producer Alejandro Levin and well-known musicians Chris Whitley, guitarist Mark Ribot, drummer Larry Mullins, and Brazilian Vinicius Cantuaria, among others, to make an "alt Latino" record with a well-crafted mix of rock, pop, electronica, drum'n'bass, and even traditional Latin rhythms. Ely Guerra delivers her refined and breathy singing in songs such as "Profundidad," "Tengo Frio," "Silencio," and the bossa nova-flavored "Prometo Ser."
