The ensemble P.A.N. specializes in ars nova, a complex and somewhat abstract style of vocal music which developed during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and was considered quite adventurous for its time. This album concentrates on works by Johannes Ciconia, a little-known, yet central figure in the ars nova movement. Though relatively few of Ciconia's works have been published, especially compared to his more prolific contemporaries Philippe de Vitry and Guillaume de Machaut, the few pieces of his which have survived can be shown to have significantly affected European music composed throughout the fifteenth century. These performances of Ciconia's works are revelatory; the singing of countertenor Michael Collver, in particular, is excellent. Minimal instrumental accompaniment and a very "live" acoustic combine to create the perfect ambience. An exceptional program.
