Details
[Edit]Complete Clapton attempts to chart a career that encompasses not only several decades but an almost unprecedented array of bands and musical styles. What comes through over the course of this two-disc collection is Eric Clapton’s ability to inhabit a diverse sequence of musical settings. While peers like Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones have achieved longevity by honing a singular voice and sticking with it through shifting trends, Clapton has repeatedly coaxed his audience into uncharted territory. Who else could convincingly take us from the psychedelic tempest of “White Room” to the late-night reggae of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” in the span of just a few years? And from there, to the soft soul balladry of “Wonderful Tonight,” the gentle R&B of “Change the World,” and the traditional blues of “Sweet Home Chicago.” Clapton's dual talent as songwriter and guitar player is encapsulated in the two versions of “Layla” included here. While the original 1970 recording is a pinnacle of rock guitar glory, the 1992 Unplugged version illuminates the great song underneath.
