Details
[Edit]The repertoire of the mid-'60s Miles Davis Quintet is adapted and explored on this excellent CD by pianist Eric Gould, bassist Leon Lee Dorsey, and drummer Greg Bandy. Despite the absence of trumpet and tenor, the 11 songs on the project work quite well in this format. The repertoire includes a few standards ("Nefertiti," "E.S.P.," "Seven Steps to Heaven," and "Nardis") and some songs not often recorded since the '60s. Gould's piano style, though influenced a little by Herbie Hancock, is pretty original, and his close interplay with his sidemen results in an appealing and fairly distinctive group sound. Each of these performances works quite well as Gould and his trio pay a little tribute to the past but also come up with consistently fresh statements. Recommended.
