Myth Understanding

Guitarist Eric Hofbauer wrote all of the songs for his delightful project Myth Understanding, where he is joined by tenor saxophonist Kelly Roberge, bassist Michael Montgomery, and drummer Miki Matsuki. The punning album title is just the first indicator of the leader's sense of humor, as much of his music displays it, too. Hofbauer's songs on this date are based on myths, derived from sung phrases or what he calls "puzzle pieces." "Hidden Haiku" sounds like a film noir piece that has had a bit of comedy injected into it, while "Jac Mac Talkin'" is a quirky blues inspired by the late saxophonist Jackie McLean's spoken words during an interview on NPR. The whimsical "A Drunk Monk" was generated by Hofbauer's fascination with kung fu and the music of Thelonious Monk; this piece alternates between a sauntering mood and a more dissonant flavor. "The Holly Stomp" ventures into avant-garde territory while keeping its comic air intact. It is a shame these pieces weren't recorded before an audience to hear their reactions, though the listener can provide his own without unnecessarily drowning out this enjoyable music.
