Lovers of Cuban music may need to prepare for their next great hero of the piano. Whether they are ready or not, Ernan Lopez-Nussa is ready for them. With a trio sound as powerful and self-assured as Chick Corea's Akoustic Band, yet as supple and tender as Gonzalo Rubalcaba's Inner Voyage, the only thing Lopez-Nussa and bandmates are missing is top billing. Armed with all the virtuosity that even an educated listener can digest, and seasoned with the taste and restraint of a true modern master, Lopez-Nussa is a shining star on a scene that is ready for some new direction. Lopez-Nussa is accompanied by fellow Cuban and drum legend Jimmy Branley. With two masters of "Bop en Clave," Figuraciones features some amazingly intelligent exchanges. The record contains not only the hottest Latin jazz trio passages to be recorded of late, but also some very pleasing solo piano work. An accomplished soloist as well as ensemble player, Lopez-Nussa's versatility adds a delightful depth and variety to the disc. Though it may be hard to find, Figuraciones is worth the hunt.
